Managing Canine Itch: A Guide to Using Oclamed (Oclacitinib)

Managing Canine Itch: A Guide to Using Oclamed (Oclacitinib)

, by Pets Lifestyle, 3 min reading time

Watching your dog suffer from constant scratching, licking, and skin irritation is heartbreaking. For many pet parents, Oclamed (Oclacitinib) by Medilogy is the breakthrough solution needed to stop the itch and restore their dog's quality of life.

However, success with Oclamed depends entirely on the correct dosage and schedule. Based on practical dermatology experience and guidance from Pet Expert Vishnu Dutt Tripathi, here is how to safely administer Oclamed 5.4 mg and 16 mg.

How Oclamed Works

Oclamed is a Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitor. Unlike steroids, which affect the whole body, Oclamed specifically targets the enzymes responsible for itchiness and inflammation. This allows for faster relief with fewer systemic side effects when used correctly.

The Two-Phase Dosing Strategy

To achieve optimal results, Oclamed must be administered in two distinct phases:

The Loading Phase (Days 1–14)

Given Twice Daily (BD).
This phase rapidly reduces inflammation and effectively breaks the itch-scratch cycle.

The Maintenance Phase (Day 15 Onwards)

Given Once Daily (OD).
This phase maintains long-term control while reducing excessive immune suppression.

Standard Dose

0.4 mg/kg to 0.6 mg/kg body weight.

Dosage Chart for Oclamed (5.4 mg & 16 mg)

Dog Weight (kg) Oclamed Strength Dosage (BD for 14 Days)
4.5 – 5.9 kg 5.4 mg 1/2 Tablet
9.0 – 13.4 kg 5.4 mg 1 Tablet
13.5 – 19.9 kg 16 mg 1/2 Tablet
27.0 – 39.9 kg 16 mg 1 Tablet
40.0 – 54.9 kg 16 mg 1.5 Tablets
55.0 – 80.0 kg 16 mg 2 Tablets

After Day 14, continue the same calculated tablet strength Once Daily (OD) for maintenance.

Important Safety Checklist

Before starting your dog on Oclamed, keep these essential points in mind:

Age Limit:
Oclamed should not be administered to dogs under 12 months (1 year) of age.

The 14-Day Switch:
Do not continue the Twice Daily (BD) dosing beyond 14 days unless specifically advised by a veterinarian. Always transition to Once Daily (OD) for long-term safety.

Health History:
Use with caution in dogs with a history of serious infections or malignant tumours (cancer), as Oclamed modulates the immune response.

Administration:
Oclamed can be given with or without food, making it convenient even for selective eaters.

Why Choose Oclamed by Medilogy?

Oclamed provides a reliable and high-quality option for managing Atopic Dermatitis and Allergic Dermatitis in dogs. By following precise weight-based dosing and the correct two-phase schedule, pet owners can ensure safe, effective, and long-term itch control.
