It is absorbed systemically and reaches effective concentrations in both the gastrointestinal tract and skin tissue. Praziquantel works by disrupting the tegument (outer skin) of tapeworms, causing increased permeability of the cell membrane, muscular paralysis, and rapid disintegration of the worm. It is highly effective against all major tapeworm species. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION Administer orally, directly or mixed with a small amount of food Dose is calculated based on body weight — consult your vet for the correct dose per kg For routine deworming in adult dogs: every 3 months Dogs with high parasite exposure may require more frequent treatment as advised by your vet CRITICAL BREED WARNING Ivermectin must NOT be used in Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties), Australian Shepherds, and related herding breeds. These breeds carry the MDR1 (ABCB1) gene mutation, which prevents safe metabolism of ivermectin. Administration can cause severe neurological toxicity including tremors, blindness, seizures, and death. Always inform your vet of your dog's breed before prescribing any ivermectin-containing product. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Prescription required Not for use in puppies below 6–8 weeks of age without veterinary guidance Use with caution in pregnant and lactating dogs — consult your vet Keep out of reach of children and other animals Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight Sold By: Pets Lifestyle — India's trusted online pet pharmacy Frequently Asked Questions — Virbac Ipraz Tablets for Dogs What parasites does Virbac Ipraz treat? ▼ Virbac Ipraz contains ivermectin and praziquantel. Ivermectin targets roundworms, hookworms, and certain ectoparasites including mange mites and lice. Praziquantel targets tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum, Taenia species, Echinococcus). Together, the combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against the most common internal and some external parasites in dogs. How often should Virbac Ipraz be given? ▼ For routine deworming in adult dogs, Virbac Ipraz is typically administered every 3 months. In high-risk environments — dogs with outdoor access, those exposed to other animals, or dogs in tick-endemic areas — your vet may recommend more frequent administration. Always follow the schedule prescribed by your veterinarian. Is Virbac Ipraz safe for Collies and related breeds? ▼ No — ivermectin must not be used in Collies, Shelties (Shetland Sheepdogs), Australian Shepherds, and related herding breeds. These breeds carry the MDR1 (ABCB1) gene mutation, which makes them unable to safely metabolize ivermectin. Administration can cause severe neurological toxicity including tremors, blindness, seizures, and death. Always inform your vet of your dog's breed before prescribing any ivermectin-containing product. Should Ipraz be given with or without food? ▼ Virbac Ipraz tablets can be given directly by mouth or mixed with a small amount of food to improve acceptance. Giving with food is generally recommended as it reduces the chance of nausea and improves palatability for reluctant dogs. Ensure the full tablet is consumed — do not split unless advised by your vet. Can Virbac Ipraz be given to pregnant or lactating dogs? ▼ Use with caution. Ivermectin can cross the placental barrier, and its safety in pregnant and lactating dogs has not been fully evaluated in all conditions. Praziquantel is generally considered safe during pregnancy at therapeutic doses. Your vet should assess the risk-benefit individually before prescribing Ipraz to a pregnant or nursing dog.
