Chronic Kidney Disease in Dogs — What It Is and Why Dietary Management Alone Is Not Enough

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common conditions in ageing dogs, particularly those above 7 years. Managing CKD effectively requires a combination of dietary phosphorus restriction, hydration support, and targeted supplementation — not just one of these in isolation.

Products Available for CKD Management

This section stocks renal support products for dogs, including Hills Prescription Diet k/d, Royal Canin Renal (dry and wet), Ipakitine phosphate binder, Azodyl probiotic for uremic toxin reduction, and kidney support tonics from Virbac and Himalaya. Early-stage CKD (IRIS Stage 1-2) often responds well to dietary modification alone. Moderate to advanced CKD (Stage 3-4) requires combined dietary and pharmaceutical management.

Monitoring Requirements

Dogs on renal management need creatinine, BUN, and phosphorus checked every 3 months to track progression and adjust treatment. All prescription renal diets require a confirmed CKD diagnosis from a vet. This section does not stock IV fluids — those require in-clinic administration.
