SAVAVET PHOSLURE® contains Sevelamer Carbonate, a phosphorus-binding agent that helps manage hyperphosphatemia (elevated serum phosphorus levels), particularly in pets with chronic renal failure. By binding dietary phosphorus in the gut and preventing its absorption, PHOSLURE® plays a vital role in protecting kidney function, reducing complications of renal disease, and maintaining overall metabolic balance. In addition to lowering phosphorus, it can also reduce serum cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins. As it is not absorbed systemically, Sevelamer acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract, making it safe and effective for long-term phosphorus control in dogs and cats.

Composition (per uncoated dispersible tablet):

Pharmacology:

  • Pharmacodynamics: Binds dietary phosphorus in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing absorption and thereby lowering serum phosphorus levels. Also lowers total cholesterol and LDL levels.

  • Pharmacokinetics: Administered orally; not systemically absorbed, acts locally in the gut.

Indications:

  • Management of hyperphosphatemia associated with chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats

  • Particularly useful when oral aluminum-based phosphate binders are not tolerated

  • Controls high blood phosphorus in renal failure patients

  • Helps reduce risk of secondary complications like renal osteodystrophy

  • Cats & Small Dogs: 200 mg (½ tablet) 2–3 times daily with meals

  • Dosage to be adjusted as per veterinarian’s advice based on serum phosphorus levels

Contraindications:

  • Hypophosphatemia

  • Bowel obstruction

  • Hypersensitivity to Sevelamer

Warnings & Precautions:

  • Not for human use – veterinary use only

  • Keep out of reach of children

  • May reduce absorption of fat- and water-soluble vitamins; supplementation may be necessary

  • Use during pregnancy and lactation not established – administer with caution

Drug Interactions:

  • Anticonvulsants (oral): May reduce absorption – give 1 hour before or 3 hours after Sevelamer

  • Antiarrhythmics (oral): Same timing precaution as above

  • Ciprofloxacin & other fluoroquinolones: Absorption reduced up to 50% – give 1 hour before or 3 hours after Sevelamer

  • Other Oral Medications: Dose separately, particularly for drugs with narrow therapeutic indexes

  • Vitamins: Absorption may be reduced – give supplements separately

Adverse Effects:

  • May reduce oral vitamin absorption

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort possible in sensitive animals
