VISIOAID® Schirmer Tear Test Strips are precision veterinary tools made of high-quality filter paper. Each strip is printed with a calibrated scale and a fluorescent dye line that co-migrates with tear flow, allowing for easy and accurate measurement of tear production. These strips can be stored and used for comparison in follow-up examinations, ensuring reliable monitoring before and after treatment. Indications:VISIOAID® Schirmer Tear Test (STT) is indicated for measuring tear production rates in dogs. It is essential for evaluating ocular conditions where tear deficiency may contribute, including: Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) Pigmentary Keratitis Indolent Corneal Ulcers Exposure Keratitis Preoperative assessment of lacrimal gland function before cataract surgery Directions for Use: Ensure the dog’s eye has not been exposed to topical medications or manipulated prior to testing. Position the dog comfortably, away from direct light. Open the strip sachet carefully: Peel using thumbs and index fingers Pull open halfway Gently remove the strip holding the flat end Insert the rounded end of the strip into the lower conjunctival sac while the dog looks upward. Ensure secure placement. Leave the strip in place for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Remove the strip and read the tear migration distance on the graduated scale. STT Detection Criteria: Normal tear production: ≥ 15 mm Borderline: 10–14 mm Dry eye diagnosis: ≤ 10 mm Severe dry eye: ≤ 5 mm After diagnosis, appropriate artificial tear therapy can be administered according to severity. Contraindications: Dogs with ocular surface damage, corneal or conjunctival inflammation, or ulcers. Warnings and Precautions: Perform prior to topical anesthetic administration. STT measures only the aqueous layer of the tear film; deficiencies in mucin or lipid layers may still cause corneal irritation or opacity. For ophthalmic use in dogs only.
